After meeting Joel Daniel Phillips in San Francisco in January of 2013 he and I immediately struck up a friendship and I’ve been trying to find the time to interview him ever since. His artwork fascinates me, not only because we both work in pencil or that our subjects are located in San Francisco, but that his work is immediate to the viewer. The subjects are taken out of the landscape, pure white backgrounds floating behind them, allowing you to place them where you may be or want them to be. The works are obviously social commentaries but Joel just gives you the ingredients and you’re left to make what you wish.
Photographer Shaun Roberts recently captured Joel at work on pieces for Art Market SF 2015 and we decided that accompanying the wonderful photographs that a lengthy interview would fit quite nicely. He and I talked over the course of several weeks and the interview below is drawn from that:
